COMMUNITY CLASSROOM: Engaging Students and Teachers Through Film

COMMUNITY CLASSROOM is an exciting new resource for educators.  It provides documentary video content accompanied with innovative, resource-rich curricula for high school, college and other youth educators.  VIdeo content is excerpted from the Emmy Award-winning PBS series, Independent Lens, and all lesson plans are standards-based.  Featuring educational content for the following films:

HIP-HOP: Beyond Beats and Rhymes  A groundbreaking documentary that examines representations of manhood, sexism and homophobia in hip-hop culture.

SENTENCED HOME  Raised as Americans in inner-city projects near Seattle, three young Cambodian refugees each made a rash decision as a teenager that irrevocably shaped their destiny as they now face deportation.

KNOCKING  Jehovah's Witnesses are moral conservatives who stay out of politics, but they won a record number of court cases expanding freedom for everyone.

PLEASE VOTE FOR ME  Eight-year-old children compete for the position of class monitor in the first school election of its kind in China.  Aided by parents and teachers, the young candidates reveal the nature of democracy in a rapidly changing country.

IRON LADIES OF LIBERIA  A look at the achievements and struggles of Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, the first woman elected President of Liberia.  Can the first female Liberian president bring sustainable democracy to a country recovering from fourteen years of civil war?
